Product Description You know that creating regular PC backups is important, but you never seem to get around to burning those CDs or copying your files to your expensive and complicated external hard drive? Sound familiar? Well PC backup doesn't have to be such a pain in the neck! PC Backups with Carbonite automatically finds all your data files -- photos, documents, music, emails, everything! Simple to use, with nothing new to learn -- Carbonite just looks like another disk drive on your computer with a copy of all your data. Sit back and relax while Carbonite automatically finds all your data files, encrypts them, and backs them up over the Internet to our secure servers. Big companies always back up their data off-site, and now you can too. Carbonite runs in the background, making sure new and changed files are backed up every day. But Carbonite never slows down your Internet connection or your PC. Backup operations automatically slow down whenever you're actively using your computer and speed up again when your computer is idle. The Carbonite Secure Backup drive in your My Computer folder shows you all the files and folders in your backup, organized just as they are on your computer. To restore a file or folder, just right-click on it and select ?Restore? - it will be put back in its original location on your hard drive. Or, select ?Restore to?? and save the file or folder to a new location. Strong encryption for super security Backs up approximately 2GB per day over DSL or Cable Carbonite installs with one click. Sit back and relax while Carbonite automatically finds all your data files, encrypts them, and backs them up over the Internet to Carbonite's secure servers Requires broadband Internet connection

Resource HOG!! No Customer Service December 9, 2008 Carbonite caused our computers to lock up daily and slowed the DSL line to a crawl. Was overcharged when first set up and never could get my $ returned. RUN RUN from this company and software.
Great concept, poor execution December 8, 2008 I'm no techie so I wanted a reliable backup service that would handle the details for me. Carbonite seemed to do this initially. Granted, it took several days for all my data to get backed up (and I don't think I have an inordinate amount of data on my computer) but the process seemed fairly painless.
Unfortunately, about a month into using the service I tried to open a 75-page document I had created in Microsoft Word only to learn that it had become corrupted the day before. I contacted Carbonite to find out if their service saves previous backups. I spent 3 hours waiting for and then corresponding with their tech support online via "chat." I'm not sure if they outsource the support to India or another foreign country but there was a serious communication problem. I asked my question in the first 10 lines of the chat only to learn 3 hours later that the answer to my question was NO, that they do not save previous backups. Each backup overwrites previous copies. I ended up calling my local computer guru who charged me $40 and fixed my corrupted document in about an hour.
I then decided to change the Carbonite setting to back up my computer at midnight every night rather than on an ongoing basis. Well, when you try to do that, it holds your setting for a day and then reverts back to backing up on an ongoing basis. I emailed customer service two weeks ago for a "fix" on the backup settings, received an email about a week later with instructions that led me to an error message, emailed them again, and received the SAME exact instructions from them again a week later. Today I sent them yet another email explaining the error message. We'll see.
I'm scared that if my computer did crash, I'd be left in the wilderness alone to navigate retrieval of the backup. Basically, the concept is a great one. But if I can't trust Carbonite to be there for the little details now, can I trust they'll be there to help when The Big Crash happens?! It's a big risk to take.
Product works just fine December 8, 2008 Aside from a poor experiene after my trial ran out and having to re-install on one of the computers that I am using one of three subscriptions on this has worked pretty flawlessy.
I run it on my laptop, wife's laptop and one desktop at my office that is on my netowork...I set up robocopy to pull files from a variety of computers on the network and I store them on a 1 TB drive that I have installed on this desktop...Carbonite is set to back those files up. It works flawlessly.
One of the files that we back up to this desktop is one gig and growing. This is a DataBase file that is Critical thus the three backups with Carbonite being my "offsite backup"
After reading all of the negative reviews I am either really lucky or really stupid...or the software just works...
I do not work for carbonite an dhave not been paid for this posting.
Not a Complete Image Backup Like Windows XP's Own Built-In Backup Utility! November 3, 2008 I had a computer go down a few months ago. The computer was making clicking sounds on occasion. I had just installed Carbonite a few weeks earlier. Sure enough, I needed to restore the computer. Much to my disappointment, Carbonite DID NOT COMPLETELY BACKUP THE COMPUTER. It only backs up key system files/folders such as Documents and Settings, Favorites, and Desktop. MY hard drive is 120GB. Carbonite backed up about 20GB in total on its own and said it was done. It turns out that other files must be manually selected by right-clicking on them to be backed up. What a time consuming chore that can be. Why can't Carbonite automatically backup ALL FILES on the drive?
Another annoyance is the sound of the floppy drive as Carbonite attempts to access it. It often happens when web pages are accessed or programs are started or closed. I asked Carbonite customer support and they said they were aware of others having this issue. They said it would go away after the initial backup was completed. They were wrong!
Luckily, I had used Windows XP's own built in backup program called Backup Utility. It can be accessed by clicking 'start', 'run', then type in 'ntbackup'. It will copy EVERYTHING on a drive just like Ghost would if you want it to and also restore the registry to it's previous system state if selected. You would want to have a separate external hard drive to keep the backup files on. Not the C drive. Your backup drive should be equal to or larger than the drive being backed up. Once windows has been reinstalled, go back into 'start', 'run', type 'ntbackup' and select 'restore' It will simply ask for the location of the backup files. This utility is on of the best things Bill Gates has done for Windows. A definite stroke of genius and a good gesture. Plus it's free. I understand Vista has a backup program too.
So now the only advantage of Carbonite is off-site backup in case of theft, fire, flood, etc. Remember it's not an exact mirror backup of your computer. Otherwise, save yourself $50 a year for the subscription!
Carbonite is a RESOURCE HOG!! They also will not give refunds if you are not satisfied... October 20, 2008 Carbonite is very resource intensive. It completely locks up our workstations when it is backing up (which happens all day long). It is advertised as a product that is suitable for small business use, but clearly it is not.
I purchased 20 licenses with the intention of rolling it out to all of our users, and everyone was so angry with me for installing it on their workstation, that I ended up removing it from everyone's workstation entirely. (We run Dell Workstations that we purchased about a year and a half ago).
I tried contacting Carbonite tech support via phone....after several hours of being on hold, I gave up. I even tried different days of the week and I never got through.
Their online help suggested that I change a setting that sets Carbonite's Internet usage to a lower priority, but that did not make a difference. They also suggested running a CHKDSK but that did not solve the problem of the Carbonite application being a resource HOG!
What's worse....I tried to get refunded for the licenses that we did not use and Carbonite refused to offer a refund for the unused licenses. Unbelievable.
