Diskeeper 2007 Professional Review August 17, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Windows 2000 and Windows XP both come with a "lite" version (aka, an incomplete version) of diskeeper to defrag the hard drive. Every computer of every OS flavor causes a file to fragment every time you use it (including the OS files). The lite / included version can do some things like defrag the files that are closed on your hard drive with a manual defrag of your hard drive. The lite version CANNOT touch the MFT (Master File Table) or do a boot time defrag and get your folders defragged. I have used older versions since diskeeper came out but this current version is fantastic! You can set it to defrag your files during idle processor time and gives you a Job report tab that helps you decide if you need to run a defrag at this time by putting up a comparison between current read time and optium read time (post defrag) plus the job report has lots of other features that can help you--is your hard drive healthy? current stats, most fragmented files, MFT and page file size, and lots of other data. The Program can be set to go out and check for updates weekly or manually. The Graphics USer Interface is easy to interpert. And the most important thing is that this can help keep your computer healthy and running as fast as it can buy not having to put over 500 peices together to form a single file before you can access it. I would NEVER own a computer or server without this software on it and in use.
Solid Product w/ Real Performance Gains July 5, 2007 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
Positives: Runs in the background and doesn't slow down other system operations, doesn't plug up the system tray with unnecessary icons, and increases system speed, keeping it fast.
Negatives: You have to manually toggle Master File Table settings and paging file defrags. But, it's not a huge deal, since there isn't really isn't any other way to do it.
Bottom Line: After a fresh Vista install, I installed all of my usual programs, then set up Diskeeper. Even though the OS install was new, Diskeeper was able to increase performance by 23%. I've seen similar results in Windows XP installs, as well. It should also be noted that the program can be configured to work more efficiently on mobile notebook computers (stop defrag while on battery power, allow hibernation/sleep, etc.). The automatic defrag function can also be disabled, should you wish to manually defragment the system yourself.
If you're looking for a functional, unobtrusive, and effective defragmentation solution, look no further.
Sloppy crapware June 20, 2007 4 out of 9 found this review helpful
I use version 8 of this program, and it's ok. The new version (11) sucks.
The good news is that some 20 years after defragmentation was needed by the public, these %!@#s decided to make it sort of transparent, and vaguely automatic. Nice in concept, lousy in implementation. Their marketing scumbags call it "i/o smarttasking".
The bad news is that it's more hype than progress. For the last two days since I installed the trial, my computer does not hybernate anymore, because it's ALWAYS defragmenting! Perpetually, incessantly, idiotically. I try to run a full defragmentation, and it quickly announces that it's DONE. But then in the background it keeps defragmenting and defragmenting--ON and ON--even though it was done! I close the lid (so laptop will hybernate), and it stays on all night. Two days later it STILL doesn't finish. I also noticed that everytime I save any file, it does a bunch of work and causes the fan to spin faster/louder. My nice new laptop stays hot ALL the time with this program running. It never stops!!
The interface is pretty and modern, but the functions you need (such as "stop the !%#$ing 'smart' tasking") are scattered all over and hard to find. There's about 4 separate menus, when one would work much better. Classic case of style over usability.
If you have a laptop, stay away from this bloated fashionware. It'll fry your legs/lap and wear down your harddrive, because it never stops the incessant supposed defragmenting.

Works very well for defragging on the fly. I'm able to play the Lineage II on-line game in 1600 by 1200 rez where I wasn't able to before without a lot of crashes. I recommend it. Note: It is an advanced version of the native Windows XP defragger and replaces it upon installation.
