| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description The subject of error-control coding bridges several disciplines, in particular mathematics, electrical engineering and computer science. The theory of error-control codes is often described abstractly in mathematical terms only, for the benefit of other coding specialists. Such a theoretical approach to coding makes it difficult for engineers to understand the underlying concepts of error correction, the design of digital error-control systems, and the quantitative behavior of such systems. In this book only a minimal amount of mathematics is introduced in order to describe the many, sometimes mathematical, aspects of error-control coding. The concepts of error correction and detection are in many cases sufficiently straightforward to avoid highly theoretical algebraic constructions. The reader will find that the primary emphasis of the book is on practical matters, not on theoretical problems. In fact, much of the material covered is summarized by examples of real developments, and almost all of the error-correction and detection codes introduced are attached to related practical applications. Error-Control Coding for Data Networks takes a structured approach to channel-coding, starting with the basic coding concepts and working gradually towards the most sophisticated coding systems. The most popular applications are described throughout the book. These applications include the channel-coding techniques used in mobile communication systems, such as: the global system for mobile communications (GSM) and the code-division multiple-access (CDMA) system, coding schemes for High-Definition TeleVision (HDTV) system, the Compact Disk (CD), and Digital Video Disk (DVD), as well as the error-control protocols for the data-link layers of networks, and much more. The book is compiled carefully to bring engineers, coding specialists, and students up to date in the important modern coding technologies. Both electrical engineering students and communication engineers will benefit from the information in this largely self-contained text on error-control system engineering.

Nice! November 18, 2008 This book is easy to read. Similar in style to Lin and Constello's book; i.e., lots of examples, and emphasizes engineering aspects of a given code rather than endless theorems. Moreover, it discusses real world applications of codes, e.g., DVD, thereby putting them in perspective.
Poor Typesetting July 16, 2008 I find it hard to believe that with software and computers available to the authors and publisher in 1999, this book can look like a book published in the 50's and 60's. For me, this makes the book difficult to read. Have these guys ever heard of Latex? It was precisely developed for academics who do technical writing with professional results. This book resembles a very bad Word document. In my opinion, regardless of how good the content, there is no excuse for the lack of effort in presentation style. All I can say is that there are no shortage of great coding books that have better coverage than this book, all with FAR better modern typesetting, i.e. Lin and Costello, Todd Moon. I'm real disappointed considering that the first author was a leading researcher in the field. 2 stars and I'm being generous.
A reasonably in-depth of error control codes July 9, 2002 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a book with a reasonably in-depth and comprehensive coverage of error control codes. Of course, Reed-Solomon codes are extensively discussed. Many examples of applications in real-world systems.
Channel coding books should include application examples! March 13, 2002 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a book with many useful examples. I like it a lot. Recently, I read some coding books and found that they are too theoritical. Applicable technologies should be easy to understand, But I have hard time to understand some of the coding books. This one is a good reference for coding applications because it covers real applications such as GSM, DTV, DVD, etc..
An good introduction on error-control coding applications February 1, 2002 This is a good on error-control coding applications for university students. I found that many examples provided in the book are very interesting. Some of them are hard to found in other textbooks. I wish the school professor can teach those real examples. I recommend this book.
