The authors of MCSE: TCP/IP for NT Server 4 Study Guide present more than facts, choosing to back up "hard" material with analogies, exercises, and other supplementary prose. It's important to note that they do cover all the subjects that appear on the TCP/IP exam--they use Microsoft's guidelines as a means of organization. Whether the supplementary material is a help or a hindrance depends on your learning style.

If you're an MCSE candidate in search of a sparer style, you might be happier with a different TCP/IP preparation book; but if you prefer readable prose and experiments in addition to lists of facts, you'll appreciate the authors' approach here. If you don't want to haul a book around at all, you will benefit from the quiz programs on the two CD-ROMs that accompany the book. --David Wall

Candidates for the MCSE credential who have chosen the TCP/IP exam (exam 70-59) for their elective are the target audience for this study guide. The CD-ROM includes essential information resources on TCP/IP and Microsoft's ExamPrep sample testing program. .

As this Exam expires on 28th Feb 2001, I can imagine that not much use will come of this review. However if you need a background in TCP/IP from a Microsoft OS perspective this would be a very helpful book. If it is out of print by then a good alternative is the Sybex book: Mastering TCP/IP for NT Server, by Mark Minasi and Todd Lammle, huge chunks of the 2 books are the same, with the Study Guide going into greater depth in some areas.

My thoughts about this book, well written with a little humour, which helps to make the topics covered easy to grasp, and to make this book enjoyable to read. I especially liked the inclusion of explanations for the answers.

A word of advice to any Budding MCSE is hands on PRACTICE. Do what ever it takes to set up a network at home if you can't at work or in class. Three computers are all you need, and when compared with the cost of a course it would be easily worth it.

Book is full of information on routing, WINS, DNS. Detailed explanation of how name resolution works. Has a great sample Transcender demo included. I Still had questions after reading the book from front to back.

Throughout the book, the author is trying to be funny instead of really explaining the material. It was a frustrating book to read, and I'd wish I bought another book. Because I have experience with TCP/IP, I passed the exam, but most of the questions were not really covered in this book.

This book is at best an average book, it has adequate coverage of the topics, but there are better books on the subject


Rambling, digressing tale of TCP and IP   August 20, 2000
I have begun to read through the book and so far it has proven to be a disappointing start. The authors, if they understand the material well, cannot convey it in a coherent manner and often disappear into the woods mumbling about subnetting and IP classes. By all means, do NOT use this book alone; instead, use as supplements other books like "MCSE: Electives in a Nutshell" by Michael Moncur and the Microsoft Readiness Review. There are books (and authors) that, at the end, murder their subject matters. But it seems that Todd and Monica are already guilty of manslaughter by Chapter 2, and that does not bode well for me.
