Well done. September 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a delayed review, but after the last few books I've read... I had to come back and give this book props. The highlight of Todd Lammle's writing here is his breakdown of subnetting. I see how people could get confused, even intimidated, when reading the addressing chapters of the Cisco Press CCNP BSCI or TCP/IP Vol 1 from the CCIE library. This book, however, will show you how to subnet quick and in your head, and will show you how simple it really is. If all you are doing is working towards taking the CCNA exam, this is likely the most important skill you could walk in with.
With Cisco exams, it is not uncommon to come across a number of questions that couldn't be found anywhere aside from the actual Cisco documentations (http://www.cisco.com/univercd/home/home.htm). However, I recall that there may have only been one or two questions on the 640-802 that weren't sufficiently covered in this book.
I would have given the book a 5, but there are soooo many typos. You can tell they just wanted to pump out the book quickly, to cash in on the new exam. Nevertheless... should be all you need for the exam.
As a side note... to have some good quality, practical CCNA knowledge, I recommend Cisco Press' CCNA Portable Command Guide. That guide gives you a lot of goodies that you will actually use while on the job.
Almost perfect! February 7, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This version of Todd's CCNA study guide is almost perfect, I've used all five. But there are small copy editor errors throughout, including those in the Virtual Lab labs. And when he says in the Tip on page 712 that if you are cramming for the Composite 640-802 exam you can skip this next section, don't do it! There are answers to 3 exam questions on the next page.
What you need for your studies January 23, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I used an earlier revision of this book to first get my CCNA. I enjoy the writing style and Todd's approach to the topics. The exam was a snap using this material although no matter what you use you are going to need to study hard. The current version is as well written as the previous versions and I will be using it in training for myself and others.

A more interesting read than the Cisco Press version. The Sybex version has a more conversational approach to writing. More friendly, if you will, and more fun to read.
